Lately, I have been doing quite a bit of networking, running from one meeting to the next. This past Tuesday, I had gone to the SMPS (Society for Marketing Professional Services) meeting where the Vice President of Disney's Yellow Shoes department, Joe Rand, spoke. Not verbatim, but the following are few points that I got out of his speech about success and excelling. |
- Do your best with the best attitude you can have. Even if you're having a bad day don't let it show in your job, OR on your Facebook page (Employers do check).
- Exceed expectations. If your boss asks you for A and B in two weeks, give them A, B, AND C in four days.
- Get out your comfort zone. Don't let the fear of the unknown or failure become your road block to success. You learn just as much or more from your mistakes as your victories. If you never try, there isn't much possibility you'll succeed anyway.
I came home and thought about the meeting and no later than the following night, I and a few others had a conversation with the UCF’s CEO Knight’s current president, Jonathan DeLeon, on what we thought success was. Others had wonderful responses on the matter, usually leading to a final end, but I can’t say success has any final destination.
My definition of success is to always be learning. When I find that “successful” job, it will be a position where I’m always learning something new. I never expect to know everything and acknowledge that I know almost nothing, but that does not stop me from having that desire to learn as much as I can.
On the topic of success, I have two questions for you, readers:
- What do you need to do to succeed?
- What is your definition of success?
